Steeped in the venerable tradition of club-land’s holy trinity, New York, Chicago, and Detroit, Escort’s self-titled album is an well informed and unadulterated party. Opener “Caméleon Chameleon” is a theatrical masterpiece about the French serial impostor Frédéric Bourdin, set to a beat that’s equal parts Thriller and the Tom Tom Club. With piercing horns and silky vocals “A Bright New Life” commands you to the dance floor. “Love in Indigo” blends the enormous R&B vocals of Adeline Michèle with lush strings creating a disco extravaganza that is all their own. The tracks, “Makeover” and “Why oh Why” explore the lost possibilities of another era. The 1937 standard “A Sailboat in the Moonlight” is twisted into a lost August Darnell classic. Escort is sometimes raw, sometimes psychedelic, but always tight and they have managed to produce a remarkable dance album that has a something for everybody.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell

I haven't heard anything as just completely perfectly formed out of the gate--every decision the right one, what to include but more what to exclude--maybe ever.
